Zahra in Year 7 designed an amazing flag for our Antarctica Flag Competition, run by Mrs Southern, Geography Teacher and leader of the lunchtime group Eco Explorers. The Eco Explorers designed flags of their own creation, and after judging, Zahra's flag was declared the winner. Her entry was sent off to join a team of Scientists, who are currently travelling around the Weddell Sea on the RRS Sir David Attenborough, as part of the British Antarctic Survey.

Zahra's flag has travelled to Antarctica with Laura Taylor, a PhD student and a part of the BIOPOLE team. The photograph of Laura holding Zahra's flag was taken on the Weddell Sea, in the ice covered region of it. Laura is a PhD student in Southern Ocean biogeochemistry. Laura's study includes co-ordinating water sampling around the areas of the Weddell Sea covered by sea ice for the BIOPOLE project.

Laura is a student with the British Antarctic Survey and University of Cambridge Department of Earth Sciences. Her PhD 'Isotopic approaches to unravelling export and recycling processes in the Southern Ocean' explores the impact of nutrient input from ice melt on biogeochemical cycling and carbon export around the Antarctic Peninsula. Laura's work involves water sampling and chemical analysis, amongst other things, and she is part of the Ecosystems and Polar Oceans group at BAS. Laura previously studied her Masters Degree in Climate Change and her Bachelors Degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia.
