Carr Hill High School’s Gardening Club has been running for two years and continues to be popular amongst students of all ages.

The club runs during lunchtimes five days a week throughout the warmer months and three days a week throughout the colder months. Gardening Club takes place in the school allotment and students help with everything from planting and pruning to general maintenance and upkeep.

Miss Ashton, who runs Gardening Club, said: “The club is a great way for students to learn practical life skills and gain knowledge about plants, animals and nature. We have a large garden and there is plenty to do to keep it looking good. The students who come along to Gardening Club have a real sense of pride in the garden and enjoy seeing the results of their work.”

Year 8 student Lindon comes to Gardening Club as it is something fun to do during lunchtime. He said: “It is a nice break from classroom work and means I can spend some time in the fresh air.”

Fellow student Connor likes learning about nature. He said: “I come to Gardening Club as we learn a lot about how plants and animals live and those things interests me.”

A regular group of students have been attending Gardening Club since it began. Miss Ashton said: “Understandably this club is more popular in the spring and summer. However we are lucky to have a group of students who continue to come through the winter months and play a key part in maintaining the garden and ensuring it stays tidy.”

Dajana has been coming to the club since it started and her friend Lucy recently joined her. The students have been planting pansies in the last few weeks. Lucy said: “We like being outside and doing something different. There is always lots of jobs to do and every week we get to try something new.”

Gardening Club is open to all students. Please see Ms Aston if you would like to come along to Gardening Club.
