13 of the school’s most talented computer science students travelled to Eccles to take part in a Family Hack Jam event. Pupils were tasked with coming up with their own game based on the theme of the area of Eccles.

The aim of the Family Hack Jam events, which take place across the North West, is to bring people together to discover the fun, excitement and power of computer science through teamwork based problem solving.

Carr Hill students Sam, Fraser and Chris formed a team and created the winning game. The pupils worked together to generate a Roulette style game. Players had to avoid attack from invading Eccles cakes and if they were unsuccessful, instead of losing a life, they would have to pick an Eccles cake at random. There were six Eccles cakes on offer and just one was poisonous meaning players could keep going until they picked the one fateful cake which resulted in the end of the game.

The trio focused on one aspect of the game each and had one and a half hours to come up with an idea, complete the programming and demonstrate the final result. All the final games were judged in a range of categories including creativity, teamwork and the overall product. The Carr Hill students impressed in all areas and were declared the winners.

Computer Science teacher Mr Banks was one of the members of staff to attend the event. He said: “I’m impressed with Sam, Chris and Fraser’s game and delighted that they were announced the winners of the competition. All three students have a natural ability when it comes to programming and I’m pleased that their talents have been recognised at this event.”

Year 9 student Sam said: “I enjoyed programming in a group to create our winning game. It was fun to see what other pupils had designed and try out their games.”

Teammate Chris said: “We shared ideas with other groups and all helped each other with game ideas. The event was great fun and we would love to go to another.”
