Wyre and Fylde Dance Festival Tuesday 25th November 2014

Report by Sporting Elite Media Officer Jack

On the 25th November 2014 Carr Hill High School’s Dance Academy was one of 22 schools to participate in the Wyre and Fylde Dance Festival at Blackpool’s Opera House. The theme of the festival was grief and the Dance Academy’s piece was called, ‘Taken’. Furthermore, the festival was in aid of many charities such as Brian House School Hospice and Donna’s Dream House.

Carr Hill’s Dance Academy was led by Year 13 student, Amy and the Vice Captain, Year 12 student, Maiya. Also present were Academy members Nicola, Emma, Chloe, Sophie, Natasha, Ceri, Miranda, Olivia, Ayse, Hannah, Jess, Chloe, Charlotte, Megan, Jodie, Kelly and Marisse.

Before the festival began all the schools involved had a full run through of the show and even though it was a dress rehearsal the performances were fantastic. It was clear that a lot of hard work and dedication had gone into each performance and as a result each one was unique.

When it reached Carr Hill’s turn all the eyes were on them. After a quick run through with Miss O’Connor the girls were ready to go. The Carr Hill performance was one of the best. One of the main things that made it different from the other schools was that it completely showed the emotion of dance.

After rehearsals had finished it was time to get prepared for the show. When the show began a couple of hours later the Opera House was packed full of family and friends eager to see what the students had prepared. One by one each school came onto the stage and each one was even better than they had been in rehearsals. The audience got involved by giving every school the support deserved, clapping throughout the performances and loudly applauding at the end.

Eventually it was time for Carr Hill to take the stage. When they performed the room fell silent, it was sensational. Carr Hill captured the heart of the subject of grief and everyone watched ever so closely. The performance was slow and steady which made it even more effective. Every dancer showed emotion and brought something unique to the performance. The performance was breath taking and the audience took in every second. When their performance came to an end the crowd erupted with cheers. The performance was easily one of the best in the show; it was outstanding.

Year 11 students, Hannah, who dances for Mullin Theatre School, and Megan, who dances for Scream Theatre School and Elisabeth Marsden School of Dance, said: “It feels amazing to perform at the Opera House. I think it’s great to be a part of something like this!”

Dance Academy Captain Amy, who has been a part of the festival for five years, said: “I love having the opportunity to be involved as it challenges me every time. I’m pleased with the piece we performed because it’s different as it’s not all about the dance it’s about the emotion we put into it.”

Well done to all the dancers involved and Miss O’ Connor for choreographing the performance!
