Carr Hill High School hosted the 2014 ‘Large Schools’ Sportshall Athletics Competition, inviting five local schools to participate in a series of track and field sports.

Students in Year 5 and 6 from Newton Bluecoat, Kirkham St Michaels, Strike Lane, Wesham and Ribby with Wrea came to Carr Hill High School to compete in the Obstacle Relay, Foam Javelin, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump and the Vertical Jump to name but a few.

The competition takes place every year with the top two teams going through to the Wyre & Fylde Finals for the Year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics. The competition gives pupils the chance to experience competing against other schools in a fun environment and enables them to challenge themselves to beat their personal best performance in athletics.

25 Carr Hill students from Year 8 to Year 13 volunteered to help at the competition. The students are known as Sports Leaders and are selected to help deliver Carr Hill High School events to Primary Schools.

Year 13 student and Sixth Form Sports Captain Hannah volunteered at the event and was responsible for keeping the scores throughout the day. Hannah said: “I enjoy watching the primary school children have fun and partake in friendly competition. A lot of the students from the primary schools know each other so the event is also a nice opportunity for them to meet up.”

PE teacher Mr Doughty said: “The ‘Large Schools’ Sportshall Athletics Competition was a great success this year with students and staff alike enjoying a fun and competitive day of sports.

“We try to work with all our local primary schools on a regular basis covering a range of interests. Our students like to have the opportunity to work with and help younger students whilst the primary school pupils enjoy a fun day out.”

The winning school was Newton Bluecoat with 218 points and the Runners Up were Kirkham St Michaels with 156 points. Good luck to both teams for the next stage of the competition.
