Over 30 students, male and female, were taught elements of the Japanese martial art before working in pairs to develop their new skills. At the end of the day the students were assessed by the their trainers who scored the students out of 10. The grades will make up 12.5% of each students’ overall GCSE grade.

PE teacher Mrs Carroll organised the activity. She said: “As part of the GCSE course students must complete an assessment in four sports. Jujutsu could be used as one of the four assessed sports.

“I’m so pleased that we went ahead with this course as it has been a real hit with the students. Not only is the course contributing to GCSE grades it is also teaching self-defence skills and building self-confidence. I would definitely do this again, it has been a huge success.”

Year 11 student Elizabeth said: “I thought the JuJustsu was great and I would love to learn more. It was fascinating learning the self-defence elements and easy to pick up the basics. I thought the teachers were good too. They got on with us and made the lessons fun.”
