A group of 10 female students travelled down to Wembley to watch the national women’s team’s first standalone game at the home of English football.

The pupils were amongst 45,000 others who came from all over the country to witness the historical event at Wembley Stadium. Although the game finished 3-0 to Germany the Carr Hill students were proud to be able to say that they were there to see the women’s team treated the same as the men’s team for the first time.

The girls travelled from Preston to Wembley on the day before the game with transport organised through Preston North End and stayed in a nearby hotel. On the morning of match day the pupils represented Carr Hill High School in a tournament playing against over 30 other schools before making their way to Wembley stadium for the 3pm kick off.

PE teacher Mr Doughty organised the trip. He said: “We have a lot of talented female football players at this school and many dream of playing football at a national level. I felt it was important that these students had the chance to watch this game and see what they could achieve if they continue to work hard towards their goals.

“The atmosphere at Wembley was fantastic despite the poor weather. I’m pleased that the school was able to give some of our students the chance to experience this historical event.”

Year 11 Jess was one of the pupils who went to Wembley. She said: “It was the best weekend of my life. Everyone who went got on so well and I feel like I’ve made lots of new friends with similar interests to me.

“Although I have been to Wembley a couple of times before it always amazes me. I find the England players so inspiring and since I’ve come back I feel energised and motivated to become the best football player I can.”
