The Carr Hill High School Computing Club has been running for over two years and continues to be popular amongst students of all ages.

The club is open to all pupils and runs on a Tuesday after school between 3.20pm and 4.20pm. The students cover many areas of computing and much of what they learn corresponds with what is covered in lessons meaning their overall understanding of the subject is enhanced through attending the club.

The pupils use small computers called Raspberry Pi to do things such as programme their own versions of the game Minecraft. Year 10 student Louis has been going to the club for a number of years and attends local Raspberry Jam events which offer hobbyists, developers, students and teachers the opportunity to show what they have managed to achieve using Raspberry Pi.

Louis, who would like a career in the computing industry, said: “I enjoy Computing Club as it gives me the opportunity to work with Raspberry Pi and there is so much that you can do with it.  I even made my own laptop using it.”

Year 7 pupil Jessica has been coming to Computing Club for a month after her brother told her about how much he was enjoying it. She said: “I’m glad I came as so far I have learnt to code Minecraft and am currently building my own house.”

Many of the students who attend Computing Club will soon travel to Eccles to attend an event organised by Computing at School, an organisation that promotes and supports the teaching of Computer Science in UK schools. The pupils will be able to complete challenges alongside other students from schools from across the region.
