This summer Carr Hill is setting Year 7 the book bingo challenge in a bid to increase reading over the holiday period. The challenge is part of a series of activities being run under the ‘We are Reading’ initiative which is a programme designed to encourage reading and creative writing amongst young people.

Pupils have been given a bingo card and those who complete either a line or a full house over the summer break will be invited to take part in the Festival of Authors event next academic year. In order to complete the challenge students must read a book in some or all of the following categories: an adventure story, a book with science, sport, maths or technology, a book by an author you’ve not read before, the first book in a series, a laugh-out-loud book, a book ten or more years old, a friend’s favourite book, a book based on real life events or a biography, a book that is a film or tv programme.

Year 7 will be given their bingo cards before the end of term and should fill them in throughout the summer returning them to school in September.

Mr Morton said: “This is a fun way to encourage students to continue to read over the summer break. The bingo challenge also gives students inspiration to try different genres of books and the idea is for them to read new things and discover different styles or writing. I hope our Year 7’s will rise to the challenge and I look forward to seeing lots of completed book bingo cards at the start of the autumn term.”
