Students and staff celebrated a 99 per cent pass rate for year 13 pupils and a 90 per cent pass rate amongst year 12 students. A Level A*-B grades have been achieved by 35 per cent of Carr Hill students, whilst pupils gaining at least 3 A Levels is up to 35 per cent increasing from the previous year. In addition to this 100 per cent of students taking Accounting, Chemistry, English Literature and Food Technology A Levels achieved A*-B grades.

And A Levels aren’t the only area in which Carr Hill pupils have excelled. Those taking vocational courses continue to demonstrate their exceptional abilities with 60 per cent achieving a Distinction or Distinction*, making that the average grade students can expect to gain whilst studying for a vocational qualification at Carr Hill Sixth Form.

Assistant Headteacher, Mr Paul Wallace, said: “In a year where it would appear that the national results for A Levels are down, we, at Carr Hill High School and Sixth Form have bucked the trend. There have been some outstanding performances in both academic and vocational subject areas. Our students have once again demonstrated their commitment to their studies and the ability to apply themselves, in return they have been rewarded with, what is collectively, a fantastic set of results.

Many Carr Hill students will now head off to Russell Group universities, including Oxford University, whilst others have won scholarships with multinational companies and several will start workplace apprenticeships.

Year 13, Elise Hall, was the top performing student in her year. Her results, A*s in Chemistry and Biology and an A in Maths, mean that she will take up a place to study Chemistry at Oxford University in September.

Elise, who is the first member of her family to go to University, said: “Once it was suggested that I could get the grades needed to get into Oxford University it became all I wanted. I was so nervous when I checked the UCAS website as I wasn’t sure that I had done well enough in Maths because the exam was very hard. It was such a relief to know that I had got the grades and achieved my dream to study at Oxford.”

Year 13 student David Ireland has been accepted on a Scholarship with the prestigious accountancy firm KPMG. David achieved A*, A*, B  in Maths, Further Maths and Accounting. He beat off competition from over 100 other applicants to be awarded his scholarship. David will study at Durham University and undertake training at one of the company’s many offices.

David said: “A lot of my friends have been able to check their UCAS applications online so they knew that they had achieved the grades they needed before picking up their results from school. I couldn’t do that and so was one of the students who came to school without knowing. I felt so nervous before hand and was genuinely shocked by my results. Although you are given predicated grades it is so hard to know how well you have done in an exam.”

Year 12 students were also looking to the future and with many achieving fantastic AS Levels they now stand in good stead to start year 13 and gain the qualifications they need to continue down their chosen educational or vocational route.

Year 12 student, Matt Wood, achieved the best results in his year; four A grades in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Matt said: “I was hoping to achieve a good set of results as I’ve been revising and putting in a lot of extra hours, however I wasn’t prepared for four A’s! I hope I can continue to do well when I come back to sixth form next month. I’m starting to think about what university I may want to go to and these grades will help to expand my range of choice.”

Zoe Cunliffe, Year 12, gained distinctions in IT and Business Studies as well as a B in Physical Education and a C in Accountancy.  Zoe said: “I revised as much as I could and I’m really pleased with the grades I have achieved. I wasn’t nervous before I came to get my results as I had done everything I could and I knew I couldn’t change what was inside the envelop. Luckily I have got what I was working towards and will be coming back to Carr Hill in September to start my final year.”

Mr Wallace said: “Although our exam results show a fantastic group accomplishment I think it is just as important to recognise the individual success of each of our students. Some have overcome real difficulties to obtain their grades and everyone should be incredibly proud of their achievements. I would like to wish all year 12 and 13 students the best of luck with the next stage of their lives.”

Congratulations to all Year 12 and 13 students!
