For the seventh year running Carr Hill High School hosted the popular Sportsman’s Dinner, an evening dedicated to recognising the sporting success of students.

Over 2,000 awards were handed out throughout the night for achievements and progress in sports including athletics, netball, rugby, football, dance, rounders, boccia and many more. Over 250 students attended the celebratory event at Ribby Hall.

The evening is also an opportunity for the new Captains for each sport to be announced as well as the College Sport Captains and the Player of the Year for each sport. Joining the staff in presenting the awards was footballer Barry Nicholson, who has played for Scotland, Glasgow Rangers, Dunfermline Athletic and, more recently, Preston North End. Rugby Development Coach for Fylde RFC, Daniel Birchall, was also in attendance to present the rugby awards.

Parents also join students and staff for the celebratory evening. Ms Slater was one of the parents in the audience and watched as her son, year 8 student Kian McKay, was given the Rugby Player of the Year award. She said: “It was very emotional watching Kian accept his award. He really had no idea he would be picked and was so shocked. Kian wants to build a career from playing rugby so to be recognised by Mr Penney and the rest of the PE department as the Player of the Year is a huge boost and will spur him on further.

“The whole evening has been fantastic and it is great to be able to share the sporting achievements of the students.”

The awards are kept a secret from students prior to the event so most have no idea that they have been selected. Many undergo interview processes to gain positions such as College Sports Captian and have no idea how they have done until the evening.

Year 10 student Amy Croasdale was selected as the Juno College Sport Captain and will also play for the school’s Netball Academy next year. Amy said: “I really wanted to become the Sports Captain for my college but there are so many strong athletes in Juno and across the school I wasn’t sure I would be picked. When I heard my name I was shocked but happy, I’m looking forward to representing Juno College and the school at sporting events.”

Cere College Leader and PE teacher Miss Coulthard organised the event. She said: “The Sportsman’s Dinner is about rewarding our students and encouraging them to continue learning and improving their sporting skills. Sport is such a large part of school life at Carr Hill and we have so many students with a great deal of potential. It is really wonderful to have the opportunity to recognise them in front of their peers, family and teachers.”

After the awards ceremony students celebrated by tucking into a buffet before filling the dance floor to dance into the night with friends.

Miss Coulthard added: “Last night was the 7th Sportsman’s Dinner and each year it gets more popular. The list of awards seems to increase as does the number of attendees. We look forward to the same again next year and marking many more sporting successes.”
