Three Carr Hill High School students have been given the title of the second best golf team in the whole of the UK after beating competition from 500 schools across the county.

The students, Bradley Wilson, Sam Daniels and Kieran Leaman, took part in the England Golf School Knockout competition at Woodhall Spa, in Lincolnshire.  34 teams competed on the day, all having already won previous rounds in their home county.

The boys represented Lancashire and were one of the first teams to complete the course. Carr Hill High School remained top of the leader board until the last team of the day competed and just tipped them off the top.

500 schools across the country took part in the competition with knockout rounds held in each county to determine the 34 finalists. Lancashire had one of the largest number of schools taking part in the heats so the Carr Hill team had a challenging start but triumphed.

The boys were presented with certificates and golf vouchers as a prize at the end of the event which took place over two days.

Bradley, who is the team captain, said: “We were nervous but excited ahead of the competition. Once I started playing I tried to block out the crowd and just focus on the game.

“It was a great experience and we are already thinking about next year. We want to win it next time and now we have come this far we know it’s possible. Before we were aiming to get through to the final and that was a big goal to set, so to do that and beat 32 of the 33 other teams is a great feeling.”

PE teacher Mr Grady, who has been mentoring the boys throughout the competition, said: “I’m proud of their achievements. They were great ambassadors for the school and did us all proud. The competition was an opportunity for the boys to play golf at a professional level and to go Woodhall Spa to play competitively was a great experience for us all.”

Kieran said: “The other schools in the competition were all really good so I am really proud of how well we did. We are planning to practice together over the summer and are looking forward to competing in the competition again next year.”
