Miss Ajiteru is so proud of a selection of Carr Hill students, whose home language is not English, who have been very busy working on a project called 'All About My Country' in sessions with her. The students work individually with Miss Ajiteru, as part of EAL (English as an addition language) lessons, where they focus on learning English as a second language, with the aim to access the curriculum fully. The students were asked to create a presentation, full of information about their country of origin, which they then presented in the lessons, and talked about the national flag, symbol, geographical location, environment, education, popular tourist destinations, favourite local dishes amongst many other things.

All of the students have enjoyed working on their projects, and many were surprised to learn something new about their country.

Saray, a Year 7 student, wrote about the Canary Islands. She includes details about the climate, food, housing, plants and a famous water park on the island of Tenerife called Siam Park, which is very popular with tourists and claims to be the most spectacular water attraction in Europe.

Sara, a Year 10 student, completed her project on Jordan. With information about Petra - the Pink City, now one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, the Ma'in Hot Springs, well known for it's healing properties and the infamous 'Dead Sea', where you can float without sinking. Sara also details why tourists should visit Jordan, detailing that it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Middle East, due to it's religious and historical significance.

Natalia in Year 11, and Adam in Year 10, completed their projects on Poland. Natalia wrote about a famous Polish dish 'Bigos' and Adam created a beautiful presentation detailing polish culture, geographic location, food, the national symbol, history, nature and reasons to visit. He also wrote a detailed slide on Maria Curie-Sklodowska (Marie Curie), who was a woman full of passion and determination, whose work with the radioactive element radium made a big step in the development of atomic physics, as well as cancer therapy.

Mayra in Year 10, wrote about Spain, with details about it's culture, music and dancing, famous athletes and inventions, literature, nature and environment. Spain is well known for it's tourist attractions and architecture, as well as food, with paella being high on the list of authentic dishes to enjoy.

Ivana and Maria, sisters in Year 7 and Year 9 respectively, completed a display of facts about Croatia. They included details on the Country's population, islands, the national flower, information about the Dalmatian breed of dogs and it's historical relevance to the region of Dalmatia.

Hajar in Year 11, wrote about her country, Syria. Hajar writes about how her country is doing now, with the Syrian conflict being in it's 10th year. The conflict has led to a horrendous amount of deaths and displaced over half of the pre-war population all over the world. She includes before and after photos to show the devastation, details about desertification, the most famous dish and other cuisine, education and tourism. Details of the ancient city of Palmyra (a UNESCO protected heritage site) explain why it is the most famous tourist attraction in Syria, and how it was the finest building project in the world at that time. Reconstruction projects are currently in operation after the removal of the ISIS operation in 2017.

It is clear that the students have put a lot of time and effort into these presentations, and it is understandable that Miss Ajiteru is so proud. We hope you enjoy the photo gallery below, which showcases the students in front of their presentations and some example slides to show their hard work.
