This year’s Duke of Edinburgh’s award silver qualifying expedition took place in the Lake District, with all 18 Carr Hill students completing successfully. The expedition took place over three days, Friday to Sunday, with the groups walking over 17km each day and tackling some really tough routes.

Friday started from Ambleside, heading for Troutbeck via Jenkin Crag before ascending Wansfell Pike, standing at 482m. From there the groups descended and then followed Stock Ghyll northwards to the infamous Kirkstone Pass! Once over the pass the groups headed down to the campsite near Brothers Water, weary but in good spirits. Total ascent for the day was just over 879m!

Saturday saw the groups heading southwards back towards Ambleside but this time via the Scandale Pass, following Scandale Beck to High Sweden Bridge and into Ambleside. From Ambleside the groups headed westards to Skelwith Bridge and on to Elterwater, before finishing the day’s route at Baysbrown campsite. Today’s total ascent was just over 687m!

On Sunday the groups were up early for their final day in the Lakes and this was to be no easier than the rest, with over 604m total ascent! The group started westwards following Langdale Beck before a gruelling ascent to Blea Tarn. They then descended to Hollin Crag before turning eastwards back to Skelwith Bridge and from there back in to Ambleside.

Duke of Edinburgh Manager Mrs Beckett said: "It was a really tough three days but the groups kept their spirits up and all helped one another get through to the end. Well done to all!"
