This week students at Carr Hill have been taking part in a range of activities focused on doing something kind for others. The week has also been about highlighting the importance of, and value in, volunteering.

Students began the week by creating  seaside inspired drawings and poetry to be shared with residents at Milbanke Nursing Home who are hosting a seaside themed day this week as part of Dementia Action Week UK. The week continued with a visit to Pear Tree School where a group of students enjoyed a number of activities with Pear Tree pupils including: time in the sensory room, arts and crafts, baking and playing in the playground.

Meanwhile, in school  a group of students worked with the Art Department decorating plant pots to be donated to Trinity House Hospice for their summer fair whilst members of the school’s gardening club spent the morning with local charity The Friends of Kirkham Park creating bird and insect feeders to enhance local wildlife for the rest of the community to enjoy. In school, all students also had the opportunity to speak to UR Potential, an organisation which helps young people find volunteer opportunities, during lunchtimes.

Year 7 Kai- Reece was one of the students to attend the trip to Pear Tree School. He said: “Visiting Pear Tree was a new and positive experience. I really enjoyed being in the sensory room with their students and making new friends.”

Year 8 Kaydon was one of the students to help The Friends of Kirkham Park. He said: “It was brilliant to do something different and something to help local birds and other wildlife.”

Headteacher Mr Waller said: “As a school we hope this will be the first of many weeks like this giving students the opportunity to experience the benefits of volunteering and giving back. Volunteering is not only about supporting good causes it also benefits the volunteers themselves, increasing self-confidence and providing a sense of accomplishment and pride all whilst doing something to help others. I would like to thank all the students who took part in the activities this week and encourage any students who are interested in being involved in any future initiatives like this to let their mentor know.”
