Year 11’s at Carr Hill High School have achieved an impressive 221 9-7 grades despite sitting new, tougher reformed GCSE exams this year. Of the 221 top grades awarded, 48 were of the highest level-grade 9, with Physics being the subject with the single most grade 9’s achieved, followed closely by PE. The school’s top three performers opened their results to find a total of 19 grade 9s between them.

Many subjects had an impressive grade 4+ percentage pass rate. The most notable were Physics with 95%, Biology with 92%, Chemistry with 89% and Photography with 100%. All imedia, dance, performing arts, sport and workskills students performed well with each subject achieving a 100% pass rate.

Student Jess achieved an incredible  8 Grade 9’s and 2 Grade 8’s. She said: “I was a little bit worried about my results yesterday so I’m glad I’ve got them now. I did extra revision through school and at home and it has worked. I’m most pleased with my grade 8 in French as I felt the exam was challenging so it was a surprise to see that one!”

Fellow student Jess achieved an impressive 6 Grade 9s, 3 Grade 8’s and 1 Grade 6. Jess said: “I’m really shocked. I didn’t expect these results at all. I did so much revision but the exams were hard. I’m going on to study A Levels and I hope to have a career in medicine.”

Headteacher Mr Waller said: “This has been a challenging couple of years for students and staff as they prepared for the new reformed GCSEs in most subjects. These exams are designed to be tougher than previous GCSEs but students have risen to the challenge and today we can celebrate their success. 68% of the year group achieved the new standard pass (grade 4 or above) in Maths while 62% achieved this in English. We have seen really pleasing results in many other subjects including all the Sciences, PE and Sport, the visual and performing Arts, Textiles and Computing.

“There were some outstanding individual performances with 10 students achieving top grades (9-7) in eight or more subjects, including one student who has 8 grade 9s. Two students achieved the very top grade 9 in both Maths and English while another six students achieved grade 9 in one or the other.

“Sadly, this is the first year where none of our Year 11 will be returning to Carr Hill as we phase out Post 16 education. As a school we wish all our Year 11 students the very best for the next stage in their lives.”
