THE importance of nutrition and exercise is being supported by a new programme taking place within school.

The MEND programme, which stands for “Mind, Exercise, Nutrition.. Do it!” will be starting at Carr Hill High School in Kirkham and run for 10 weeks starting on 29th April.

With one in three children in the UK above a healthy weight the programme was developed in partnership with experts at Great Ormond Street Hospital in a bid to help tackle child obesity in a cost – effective way. So far it has been successful in helping over 35,000 families get fitter and healthier across the country.

Open to all families, the programme will teach children and their families a range of things revolved around a healthy lifestyle including: how to understand food labels, the fat and sugar content of our food, how to tackle fussy easting, ways to cook on a budget and how to be active and have more fun as a family.

There will be two sessions held each week after school hours which the children attend with a parent or carer and brothers and sisters can also attend to join in activities.

Mrs Shepherd, Care Leader said: “Parents and students should take advantage of this FREE family centred children’s weight management programme.

“Not only does The MEND Programme help children lose weight it also improves their levels of self-esteem and confidence. It is also a great opportunity for parents/carers to spend quality time together with their children’.

Participants get a free t-shirt, water bottle and folder with healthy tips to help the whole family.
