The Education Roadshow in action Students learn to programme a robot
CARR Hill’s bright sparks are being engineered to enjoy a brighter future.
BAE Systems Education Roadshow visited school to work with Year 7 students to promote engineering as an exciting career choice for young people. Using theatre and interactive workshops the team’s aim was to give students an insight into the world of technology and engineering, while silver medal winning cyclist Emma Pooley appeared via video highlighting the vital role engineers play in helping athletes to achieve success. Emma said: “Activities like the BAE Systems Education Programme Roadshow are a fantastic way of inspiring young people to be our engineers of the future. Athletes like me, who are competing on the world stage, work very closely with scientists and engineers to improve our performance and help to keep the UK on top of the game.”
The performance was followed by a workshop where the students worked in teams to create their own Lego Mindstorm vehicle, then competed with their vehicles to complete a short racing course. Sam Boughey said: “I really enjoyed this. It makes learning more interesting. It’s just more real and exciting when you get to do things like this.”
Larissa Hill said: “I really liked this because we were shown how to control a robot with a computer and that made me learn much more about computers. It’s definitely a more fun way of learning.” Richard Hamer, Education Partnerships Director at BAE Systems, said: “By working in partnership with the RAF and UK Sport we are reaching more young people than ever with the important message that careers in science and engineering are diverse, exciting and open to all.”
