GREEN fingered Carr Hill students are digging deep after winning 100 trees to be planted in the school grounds.

And the youngsters have wasted no time by using the trees to create an outdoor classroom and to block noise from the busy A585 running alongside the school grounds.

Science technician Mrs Pearson, who runs the Eco Council, won the 100 trees, which include Oaks, Field Maple and Rowan, in a competition run by Burscough-based company Mahood Trees.

Mrs Pearson said: “We are delighted to have won these trees. The Eco Council is still relatively new at Carr Hill but we are all having a great time raising green issues around school, such as improving recycling, and the students are really working hard to improve the school grounds.”

12 members of the Eco Council planted the trees with the help of Deputy Head Mrs Winstanley and Mrs Pearson.

Mrs Winstanley said: “The Eco Council is working extremely hard to improve the Carr Hill environment so I am delighted they have won these trees. They will obviously have a huge impact on the aesthetics of our grounds while also helping the environment.

“We are very proud that Carr Hill students are conscientious about such issues and want to do what they can to help.”

Mahood Trees has donated 100 trees to one school in each borough of Lancashire to mark the company’s one hundredth anniversary. Carr Hill won the award for Fylde.

NATIONAL AWARD FOR CARR HILL GCSE GRADES

The SSAT presents a number of annual awards celebrating exceptional achievement in schools.  Carr Hill made the grade after a record breaking 63 per cent of students passed 5 GCSE’s including English and Maths at A* - C.

There are more than 3,000 schools in England that enjoy specialist status and Carr Hill, which has been an Engineering College since 2003, is one of only seven schools to receive this year’s award.

Headteacher Mr Earnshaw said the award is for all the students and staff who worked so hard to achieve these results.

He said: “There have been a lot of changes at Carr Hill in the past 12 months to ensure we can be the best.  This has included increased and better organised coaching for staff, revision and coursework masterclasses and changing the school day to increase the pace of learning for students.  Coupling all these changes with entering English students for an early GCSE exam has obviously had a huge impact.

“Never before has Carr Hill enjoyed results like it did last summer but we want this to become the norm and through continued hard work and perseverance from all areas this is achievable. I maintain our aspiration is to become Outstanding over the next three to four years.”
