STUDENTS spent the day in prison learning all about wildlife and ended up being filmed for TV.

Counting pigs, collecting eggs and taking part in a nature trail was all part of the school day for almost 30 students from Year 8 and 9 during the visit to HMP Kirkham.

The visit is part of a project aimed at highlighting the risks to wildlife habitats and now the students will appear on BBC2s Wild Night In as they were filmed during the trip and interviewed by Springwatch regular Martin Hughes-Games.

Eco-Coordinator Mrs Pearson arranged the trip so students could see the vast conservation work carried out at the prison’s 180 acre farm.

She said: “We already enjoy good links with Kirkham Prison as they do so much in terms of conservation and self-sustainability projects that it is great for us to see such things working.

“This trip was a wonderful opportunity for Carr Hill students to really see this environment and just how much is being done there.

“The BBC interview was the icing on the cake really. They had approached us because they knew we enjoyed good community links with the prison and so wanted our students to be part of this programme.

“The students all had a great time by taking part in a sponsored chicken and pig count as well as finding various wildlife on the prison’s fantastic nature trail. All the money they raised through this will be donated to the World Wildlife Trust as this is what the Wild Night In will be promoting when it’s on TV.”

Wild Night In is on BBC2 on Sunday June 20th.

School Allotment
Wednesday, 05 May 2010 12:40

The allotment site is fast coming together now. A concrete base was kindly laid by the site team over the Easter Holidays, which meant that the shed and the greenhouse could finally go on to the allotment area. Monday morning saw the beginning of members of HMP Kirkham starting work on the fence that will enclose the site.

The eco-club and the after-school gardening club (3.10pm-4.10pm Monday's) have now planted potatoes, onions, peas and an assortment of fruit bushes. This week will see the broad beans, cabbages and cauliflowers going in. Here's to a good harvest!

Special thanks go out to Nathan Brookes and his grandad Mr Smith, who have produced three fine bird boxes which have gone up on the trees close to the site!
More special thanks go out to Miss Konate, one of our student teachers, who has been helping with the eco and gardening clubs for the last couple of weeks, your help is much appreciated!

Eco Club Visits HMP Kirkham
Wednesday, 05 May 2010 12:24

On Thursday 1st April 2010, Carr Hill's Eco Club visited HMP Kirkham. They were given a tour of the fields and greenhouses and were introduced to the many animals there.

The prison have over 50 chickens and the pupils collected the day's eggs to sell in the shop open to the public - Kirklan. The pupils were shown the herd of prize-winning longhorn cattle, saddleback pigs and 'Renegade,' one of the prison's prize-winning, enormous bulls!

After the farms, the pupils were taken on a conservation walk through woodland and meadows that once housed a second world war military hospital. It was in the woodland that they came upon the new bat house - installed on top of an old air raid shelter!

Steve Horrocks, the farm manager, told the pupils that HMP Kirkham is completely sustainable - they grow all the veg they need and recycle all their waste on site. The staff were very helpful and the pupils came away full of ideas for their own plot! Thanks go out to HMP Kirkham for a very enjoyable, informative visit!
