THE streets of Kirkham were packed as Carr Hill students joined thousands to welcome home the troops.
Year 7 student Courtney Glen was delighted to see the parade as her father is part of the regiment.
She said: “It’s quite exciting to see all the dads back and to see that they are all back safe. They are all our heroes because they go out
and risk their lives for us.”
Meanwhile Year 8 student Rebecca Fearn said she had very much looked forward to the parade.
She said: “I really wanted to see all those soldiers who have been fighting for us and I thought it was really, really good.
“I was surprised to see so many people watching but I think everyone realises just how brave these soldiers are and they deserve our
recognition.”
And Leon Illsley (Y8) said it was a chance to say thankyou.
“I wanted to be able to show my appreciation,” he said. “Obviously they are happy to be back and everyone in the community really
showed how happy they are for them.
“It’s great that Carr Hill has shown such respect to the soldiers and their families. These men just go out there and do what they are
told and I think they are all heroes.”
Headteacher Patrick Earnshaw added: “This was a wonderful occasion for the people of Kirkham. As a school we feel privileged to
be able to stand and pay our respects to these incredibly brave men and women.
“A number of our students have parents in the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and it is an honour to stand by them as they
officially welcome home their mothers and fathers.”
