Our interest turned to the ‘Eco-Schools’ status and what our school could do to become more sustainable and eco-friendly. After carrying out an environmental review, it was decided that the area that we could improve upon the most was our lack of paper recycling facilities. We have applied to Global Renewables for a grant to buy paper bins for each of the classrooms and are awaiting the result.

Another project the Eco-Council has been involved in is the ‘100 trees, 100 years’ campaign. Mahood Nursery and Lancashire County Council was giving one school in each borough of Lancashire the opportunity to have 100 native trees planted in the school grounds dependent upon how they were to be used. Our application to create a clearing for an outdoor classroom and also to screen out the noise from the dual carriageway was successful and Carr Hill will be the school to receive the trees for the Fylde.

The Eco-Council’s aim is to improve our school by also improving our community links. We have visited Kirkham allotment-holders to help us to decide what to grow and how to lay an allotment out. We have also only used local businesses, such as Dobies, Grundy’s, A&M and Keyline, to name but a few.
Our work towards sustainability and becoming more eco-friendly means that as a school we were granted the Eco-Schools Bronze award, and therefore, Eco-Schools status in January 2010.
The beginning of the Eco-Council’s journey has been a busy, yet productive time, and we look forward to more projects in the future.
