RUGBY REPORT - MARCH 2010

Last Wednesday(March 17th) the Year 9 and 10 rugby teams descended upon Liverpool St Helens RUFC for finals day of the Lancashire Emerging Schools Cup and Plate.

The year 9 team, Captained by Joe Douglas, had qualified for the Cup final by remaining unbeaten for the entire campaign, collecting wins against Garstang, QEGS, St Augustins, and Woodhey.

The Final saw Carr Hill pitted against local foes and group competitors Garstang. Garstang had spent hours on the training ground and were much improved from previous meetings. Credit needs to go to their coaches and to the commitment shown by their players. In a feisty and end to end game game Garstang came out winners 19 - 14 with a last minute try. Carr Hill battled well and did have two disallowed scores during the game.

The Carr Hill players, who initially struggled to cope with defeat, congratulated the winners and acted in a mature and gentlemanly manner, which is something the Carr Hill staff are trying to instill in all rugby players at the school.

The Year 9 team has come on leaps and bounds this year with stalwart players such as Luke Hayward, Adam Saleh, Kyle Clow, Harry Bullock, Joe Tiffen, Connor Richards and Haydon Blydgen playing a vital role in the team’s success. In addition new players such as Ben Cottam, Gavin Oaks, Will Salmon and Ben Parkinson have made an immediate impact on the team. Top try scorer Matthew Bennett is a prospect for the future and the team was well captained by North Lancashire’s Joe Douglas.

The year ten team, Captained by Adam Drew, reached the plate final with a bye in the semi final. On the day they were well beaten by Bolton’s Cannon Slade School. The match would have been closer but injuries in the game to key players such as Sam Lamb, try scorer Nathan Frodsham and Matthew Fox meant the team needed to change.

Carr Hill have now been involved in four finals in the previous two years, boasting 5 district players, highlighting the fact that Carr Hill is raising the profile of Rugby Union and is a school to reckoned with on the pitch.

THE WORLD AT HIS FEET...

Year 11 student Alex Billington is to represent his country in an international football tournament.

Alex received the surprise news during training at Blackburn Rovers and now he is looking forward to playing for England in the Montaigu Tournament in France next month.

The 15 year old said: “I was so shocked when I got the news. I didn’t know it was going to happen so I just didn’t have a clue how to react.

“I was buzzing afterwards and couldn’t wait to tell my family and friends. My mum and sister were just screaming when I told them and my dad was dead pleased.

“This is what I’ve always wanted to do. I just want to play at the highest level I can.

“I want to try and be a professional footballer and to get the chance to play for England is fantastic.”

Alex has been on Blackburn’s books since he was 12 and has managed to secure a two year scholarship there once he completes his GCSEs this summer.

But in the meantime the left back is looking forward to international glory with the Under 16s England squad.

Matt Grady, head of football at Carr Hill, said the whole school is behind Alex.

He said: “This is fantastic news. Alex has a real talent and we are all delighted he has been selected.

“This is a great opportunity for him and hopefully it’s the start of a long and successful career.

“It is also a great honour for Carr Hill to have one of our pupils representing the country at such a high standard.”

MEDAL SUCCESS FOR CARR HILL SPORTS STARS

CHAMPION athlete Tash Gardner is celebrating scooping gold and being ranked number one in Great Britain after competing in a national athletics competition.

The Year 7 student at Carr Hill recently took part in the Scottish Open Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

11 year old Tash ran in the 60m and 200m sprints winning gold medals in both while also breaking speed records with her 8.3 second finish in the 60m and 27.7 secs in the 200m.

Her finishing times rank her top in Great Britain for Under 13s and Tash is delighted.

She said: “I was very nervous before but then I was well chuffed with my times when I finished.

“I’m really pleased to be first in the country as well as breaking records in both sprints.

“I’d love to be in the Olympics when I’m older and run for my country.”

Tash was joined by three other Carr Hill students in the competition – Lucy Mansfield, 16, Katy Wyper, 15 and Chloe Needham, 13.

They also returned with medals with Lucy gaining silver in the 200m, Katy took bronze in the 60m and long jump and Chloe won gold in the pole vault.

Des Reynolds is a coach at Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Athletics Club and he is delighted with their success.

He said: “Tash did very well. When she gets it right it’s majestic to watch.

“Tash is an exception. She could be really, really good. That’s what you would assume with what she’s already running. She could probably be the best one we’ve ever had.

“Lucy and Katy did really well too. They’re both very good and we’re very pleased with what they are doing.

“All our really good sprinters have come from Carr hill. We’ve had some amazing girls from the school.”

Head of Girls’ PE Mrs Beesley said: “The school is always very proud of what all our students achieve.

“These girls show fantastic athletic skills and we are delighted with the success they are enjoying.”
